Title of Document: EMERGENCY FLIGHT PLANNING FOR THE GENERALIZED TRANSPORT MODEL AIRCRAFT WITH LEFT WING DAMAGE Yunshen Tang, Master of Science, 2006 Directed By: Assistant Professor, Ella M. Atkins, Department of Aerospace Engineering A nontrivial fraction of aviation accidents are caused by in-flight damage or failures that reduce performance. Researchers are working to ensure future avionics recognize the impact of damage/failures and guide the aircraft to a safe landing. This thesis presents an end-to-end Adaptive Flight Planner (AFP) for such emergencies and applies it to a damage situation in which a Generalized Transport Model (GTM) aircraft loses a significant fraction of its left wingtip. Trimmed (non-accelerating) flight conditions define the post-damage/failure aircraft flight envelope. A landing site search algorithm is augmented to define the reachable landing footprint and to prioritize the feasible landing runways within this region. End-to-end landing trajectories are constructed as a sequence of trim states and corresponding transitions. An LQR-based PID nonlinear controller enables the damaged GTM aircraft to correctly track trajectory commands over trimmed flight and transition segments. A suite of emergency scenarios are used to evaluate AFP performance. EMERGENCY FLIGHT PLANNING FOR THE GENERALIZED TRANSPORT MODEL AIRCRAFT WITH LEFT WING DAMAGE

Modeling, simulation and analysis of a multi degree of freedom aircraft wing model

This paper presented methods to determine the aerodynamic forces that acton an aircraft wing during flight. These methods are initially proposed for asimplified two degree-of-freedoms airfoil model and then are extensivelyapplied for a multi-degree-of-freedom airfoil system. Different airspeedconditions are considered in establishing such methods. The accuracy of thepresented methods is verifie...

Solar Energy System Design of Ultralight Aircraft for Smoke Detection and Fire Alarm Proposes

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to design and evaluate the construction of a lightweight solar aircraft that is capable of flying continuously for 24 hours relying solely on solar energy. The required energy is absorbed during the day by solar panels, some is used directly for flight, and the excess energy is stored in the aircraft battery for overnight flight. The aircraft will then be ...

A POMDP for Optimal Motion Planning with Uncertain Dynamics

This paper describes an approach to the problem of optimal motion planning with uncertain dynamics. This problem can occur whenever a vehicle suffers damage or when the environment makes the effect of motion actions unpredictable and potentially risky. We address in particular the case of aircraft with structural and/or control surface damage. The goal in this problem is to find an optimal plan...

Flight Trajectory Planning for Fixed-Wing Aircraft in Loss of Thrust Emergencies

Loss of thrust emergencies—e.g., induced by bird/drone strikes or fuel exhaustion—create the need for dynamic data-driven flight trajectory planning to advise pilots or control UAVs. While total loss of thrust (gliding) trajectories to nearby airports can be pre-computed for all initial points in a 3D flight plan, dynamic aspects such as partial power, wind, and airplane surface damage must be ...
